Alpha Blockers
Information for Patients
Doxazosin
What does doxazosin do?
Doxazosin is in a group of medicines called alpha blockers. It works by blocking alpha receptors in certain areas of the body. Alpha receptors are found on the muscle in the walls of blood vessels. When doxazosin blocks these receptors it causes the muscle in the blood vessel to relax and the blood vessel to widen. This lets the blood pass more easily through the blood vessels and will help to reduce the pressure in the blood vessels.
Key Tips for you
Take it in the evening with a glass of water.
It will work best for you if you take it at a regular time.
It may be taken with or without food.
When you first start taking doxazosin or your dose is increased then take your tablets when you are sitting down, and remain seated for a little while afterwards. This is because they may lower your blood pressure and make you feel dizzy. This should pass after the first few doses.
How do I take my doxazosin?
Always read the information leaflet that comes with your medication.
Your doxazosin is taken by mouth and is available as a tablet. If you have been given the modified release tablet it is important to take this whole and do not crush or chew it.
Take your doxazosin exactly as directed by your doctor or follow directions on the package and always ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand.
What happens if I miss a dose?
If you have missed your dose then don't worry just leave that dose out completely. Then go on as before. Do not take a double dose unless directed by your doctor to do so.
