Calcium Channel Blockers

Information for Patients

Calcium - channel blockers

There are a number of different types of calcium-channel blockers.

Examples include Felodipine, Amlodipine, Diltiazem

What do Calcium-channel blockers do?

They interfere in the way calcium is passed through smooth muscle cells.

Artery walls contain smooth muscle cells which contract and make the artery narrow in size.

Calcium-channel blockers cause these muscle cells to relax by reducing the amount of calcium that is allowed to enter the muscle cells. This in turn causes the artery to widen and therefore reduces the blood pressure.
