ARB

Information for Patients

Angiotensin II Receptor Blocker also known as ARB

Examples include: losartan, valsartan, irbesartan, candesartan

What does an ARB do?

You have been prescribed an ARB by your doctor which works by preventing the hormone  angiotensin II from binding to its receptor.  This hormone causes the blood vessels to become narrow, which causes the blood pressure to rise.  By blocking the receptor  the ARB will help to keep the blood vessels relaxed  which will help reduce the blood pressure. They also help to lessen the energy the heart has to expend from beat to beat.

An ARB are often used as an alternative to ACE Inhibitors (which are another group of medication used to treat high blood pressure), and are very useful in people who have

experienced unpleasant side effects, e.g. cough with ACE Inhibitors

The doctor will want to monitor you and may take a blood test while you are taking this medicine

Key Tips for you

You can take them with or without food.

It will work best for you if you take it at a regular time each day.

When you first start taking an ARB or your dose is increased then take your tablets when you are

sitting down, and remain seated for a little while afterwards. This is because they may lower your blood pressure and make you feel dizzy. This should pass after the first few doses.

How do I take my ARB?

Always read the information leaflet that comes with your medication.

Your ARB is taken by mouth and it may come as a tablet or a capsule.

Take your ARB exactly as directed by your doctor or follow directions on the package and always ask your doctor, nurse or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand.

What happens if I miss a dose?

If you have missed your dose then don't worry just leave that dose out completely.  Then go on as before. Do not take a double dose unless directed by your doctor to do so.

What are the common side effects ?

Some people may feel tired when they first start this medication

Can I take other medication while taking an ARB?
