Indications for use of ABPM

Why might I need 24 hour Blood Pressure Monitoring?

By measuring blood pressure regularly over a 24hour period, the doctor can get a better picture of what is happening to your blood pressure over a longer period of time. It will highlight how your blood pressure changes throughout the day and the night, and gives much more information than a single clinic, or home reading.

  •  If you have slightly high blood pressure known as "borderline" high blood pressure it can help the doctor decide if you need treatment.
  •  It can show the doctor if your blood pressure is much higher at the clinic than when you are at home or going about your normal daily routine (called white coat hypertension).
  •  It can show if your blood pressure stays high during the night which may mean altering the time at which your medication is taken.
  •  It can show the doctor how effective your medication is at controlling your blood pressure over 24 hours.
  •  It can show the doctor if your blood pressure is falling too low at times, possibly causing dizzy spells. If you take medication this could indicate that your dose needs to be altered.
