A diet high in salt has been shown to increase blood pressure.
You can cut down on your salt by:
- Keeping salt in cooking to a minimum
- Not adding salt at the table to food
- Avoiding foods that are high in salt
Check food labels for salt content
When checking food labels you should look at the 'per 100g' serving section
If you have High Blood Pressure you should avoid foods that contain more than
1.25g of salt per 100g food
OR
0.5g of sodium per 100g food
Remember it takes time for your taste buds to adjust to food without salt being added - don't give up. After a few weeks you will enjoy the taste of food with less salt added.
Take a look at the Diet and Blood Pressure booklet on the right for more information on reducing your salt intake
Also please take a look at the article from The Mail On Sunday (15/11/2009) on the right hand side about how too much salt can lead to hypertension.
